 Petra Castle was built in the VI c. During the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. It was also one of the episcopal centers of the Lazeti Diocese. The fortress-city was a military strategic and trade-economic center. Petra Prison Museum-Reserve has been operating since 1989.
